Dilley, Texas
The very first car I had was a Model-T; I traded a baby calf for it. I was eight years
old when I got my first Model-T; it was black with leather seats and had skinny tires. It ran
on .15 cents of gas. I loved my Model-T I went to school and back, I took to mom to the
store and I even drove it to San Antonio, TX. I even saw my first picture shown in my
Model-T. Every day I would pick up eight boys we drove 10 miles to get to the school. At this
time there were no roads so we went right through people pastures to get to school.
When I would take mom to the store in town it was 15 miles we parked on the side of the
road with the rest of the Model Ts. I remember looking out and seeing nothing
but people’s Model-T’s; it was the car to own in the 20’s. The Model T was built on
September 27, 1908 at the Pigueete Plant in Detroit Michigan, By Henry Ford Motor Company.
One time I took my dad to the big city of San Antonio, TX to buy food at a place
like Sam’s once a year we would go and that year I got to drive. Along the way near Divine,
I got the Model-T stuck. I was so upset I was almost in tears I didn’t know what my daddy and I were going to do.
But luck was with us that day because there was a man with a machine that could pull us out it only cost .25 cents. That was not
the last time the Model-T was stuck but each time it cost me .25 cents. My friend and I went to Pearsall the town next to us to see our
first picture show. The picture shows back in the 20’s were in black and white and had scripting at the bottom, no sound. Because
I was very young I had trouble reading the words, so I didn’t enjoy it as much as my friends did. But I was able to get hamburger,
fries and a drink for .15 cents. So it wasn’t a waste. The Model-T was the car that took me fishing in the summers and hunting in the
winters. I grew up with my car it was my friend and I’ll always remember the time I spent with my Model-T.
